Canary Wharf by NightDue to the huge success of the first editions, the 2011’s London Finance Field Trip, organized by the Nova Investment Club, took place between the 31st of October and 4th of November. The purpose of this event, was to visit the major financial institutions in London, and to learn with several high-qualified professionals currently working at the City. As finance students, this is for us the logical destination to start our career due to its standing as Europe’s de-facto financial capital.

We were very successful in arranging meetings with the major investment banks: Société Générale, HSBC, Espirito Santo Investment Bank, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Barclays Capital, JP Morgan and Nomura; and with the largest asset manager at a global level: BlackRock.

As students working to obtain their Masters in Finance, it was an once-in-a-lifetime in terms of prospective career opportunities. According to company representatives we talked with, this initiative portrayed us as well prepared, proactive and individuals interested in a career in the financial services industry. Furthermore, we also had informal meetings with our alumni and other Portuguese bankers working in London.

We are confident that the trip will be a valuable complement to our in-class training, as we witnessed the day-to-day and work of a banker in London.

In our visits to companies we also had the opportunity to visiting their trading floors and meeting  from all divisions of an investment bank or asset manager, providing a better understanding of culture, values and environment of each firm.

In the future we intend to continue organizing the London field trip and build upon the relations with all the companies that generously received us.
